Hozier achieved one of the major breakout hits of 2014 with “Take Me To Church,” which initially developed as a viral hit on the likes of YouTube before reaching more than 4 million download sales in the U.S. alone.
The song went on to reach No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the U.S. in late 2014 and spent 23 consecutive weeks leading the Hot Rock Songs chart, the joint longest chart-topping run in history. It has since topped 4 million U.S. download sales, according to Nielsen SoundScan, and was also the most streamed song of 2014 globally on Spotify with 87 million plays. After a slow chart climb the song eventually broke into the U.K. top five, peaking at No. 2., while was additionally a top five hit around the world, including topping the Italian singles chart and reaching No. 2 in Australia, Canada, France and Germany.
Hozier performed “Take Me To Church” with Annie Lennox in February 2015 at the Grammy Awards where it was nominated as Song of the Year.
His self-titled debut album was released in September 2014 and reached No. 2 in the U.S. and No. 5 in the U.K. All but one of the songs on the album was written by Hozier alone, including the singles “From Eden,” “Sedated,” and “Work Song.”
After a lengthy gap he returned in September 2018 with the E.P. Nina Cried Power, whose title track featuring soul legend Mavis Staples reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Adult Alternative Songs chart.
