A Historic Celebration
A special celebration deserves a special place, and Hotel Pontotoc, our Fashion shoot location for this Wedding Issue, is extra-special. The impressive stone building opened in 1906 Downtown on Pontotoc Avenue between Main and Front Streets. Times changed, and this beautiful building served as a bordello, a recording studio, a nightclub, until 1988 when it became a private residence for 42 years. The building slowly fell into disrepair, until in 2022 the owners decided to sell. Joseph Lewis and Tony Kuhn dreamed of owning the building, and together they bought and restored the building into a magnificent 10-room, boutique hotel and restaurant/bar. They kept many of the original components, including woodwork, doors, and plaster walls (note the walls on this page). This place is filled with character, uniqueness, and stories. In the common area, the Wurlitzer organ has been a fixture over the decades, and it still is today. Also on the walls in the common area, museums and places of interest are noted with arrows and their distance, while WEVL, the volunteer station located on South Main, is softly playing on the radio. Local art and original building artifacts are placed throughout. The basement, which was originally a Turkish bath, has been transformed into a cozy bar, The Dame. It has a speakeasy vibe and a great cocktail menu. The Garden Patio is the perfect spot to enjoy a happy hour drink or one of the outdoor concerts planned for spring. Hotel Pontotoc is a beautiful relic of Downtown history, preserved and updated to pay homage to a love of Memphis, and is an ideal destination for out-of-towners, stay-cationers, or the perfect wedding party.
A special thank you to our hosts at Hotel Pontotoc, Jon Tuck and Kyla Kennin
