Today the world is in captivity to a virus that has changed all of us. We all feel that we have no control over the simplest things that we have taken for granted for years, the purchase of toilet paper or the ability to go to the doctor. The virus has given us a shared experience which has drawn us closer to our neighbors but has led to a nation divided by the political class as they prey on our fears for their own political gains.

Influence

Influence, it’s a concept that is very difficult to define or specifically measure. It’s a word we use to compare the relationship of our politicians with their citizens, how a husband and wife interact, or what impact an employee has on their fellow employees. The use of the word influence is a lot like the use of the word love, with its many contexts. It’s a word that can sound impressive and sincere but have no meaning.

I turn 60 this week, and I was eight years old when Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated on April 4th, 1968. I lived on North Reese between Poplar and Walnut Grove. Dr. King had come to Memphis to fight for the equal treatment of the African American sanitation workers. The Sanitation Workers’ Strike had started on February 12th after two black sanitation workers had been killed by taking cover from the cold and rain in the back of a garbage truck, because they were not allowed in the building like their white counterparts.

This short passage in Proverbs gives us the instruction to plan, even when our planning is for people that we may never meet. In 1983 right out of college, I started my career in the investment business with a man named Russell Clack. Russell and I worked together for several years, and we were selfishly at odds with each other in the firm as he and I fought for position in the firm. We both left the firm for what at the time we thought was a better opportunity, and we did not see each other for 23 years. Our paths may not have crossed, but this is Memphis, so we certainly knew of the success we each had achieved as we matured in our careers. The maturity for each of us was based on a new relationship with God and the understanding that relationship brought to our families and careers.
