M-Town Market is an underground, vintage market that features thrifted clothing, custom street wear, exclusive sneakers, and local art. The event is held in a warehouse in the Binghamton area, and the market had its first debut in 2019. It was most recently held March 7th, 2020, and was hosted by Grind City Vintage and Let’s Go Memphis. M-Town had about 650 customers shopping merchandise geared towards “vintage lovers, sneakerheads, street wear enthusiasts and creative souls.” The market’s goal, according to its Instagram, is to “bring the community together with the hope of creating, building, and networking with one another.”
M-Town showcases about 25 vendors at the event, and each has a personalized area to show off their best items. These vendors have varieties of styles that they represent. Many have acquired their clothes from extensive searches through thrift stores and small flea markets. Others get their high-quality sneakers from time-consuming bidding or select online stores. While in the market, shoppers can find anything from a three-hundred-dollar pair of premier Nike shoes, to a bin full of five-dollar, old-school t-shirts. M-Town offers an extensive range of brands. Shoppers can find brands such as Nike, Tommy Hilfiger, Levi’s, Adidas, Bape, Off-White, and Ralph Lauren. Clothing from old bands, sports teams, car brands, beverage companies, and local designers are also included. The vendors are open to trading and bargaining, so customers should be prepared to bring their gear to strike a deal.
When customers arrive, they will see food trucks and people bustling to get into the doors. After paying the five-dollar entry fee, shoppers enter a space filled with large, custom made art and unique sneakers. They will go through rooms with welcoming vendors and their racks filled with hand-picked items. The walls are covered in retro sweatshirts, popular posters, colorful graffiti, and string lights. The shoppers will eventually reach the largest room packed with vendors and their goods. While shopping at M-Town, customers experience an industrial, urban atmosphere. Throughout the event, the DJ in the back plays hip-hop and rap to top off the ambiance. Any streetwear lover and sneakerhead are sure to find something that speaks to them. If not, the experience itself is truly a memorable one. M-Town Market is a great place for local designers and businesses to build up their brand for customers to experience the creative talent that this city holds.
