This month, the 4Memphis Impact staff worked with Urban Bicycle Food Ministry. The UBFM is a nonprofit organization that distributes meals each week to 200-300 people affectedby poverty and homelessness. Volunteers with backpacks ride their bikes around the Memphis area to deliver meals to those in need. The organization finds its identity within the idea of “church without walls” and considers the city of Memphis to be its church. Although Urban Bicycle Food Ministry is technically affiliated with the Christian faith, there are no religious limitations as to who can receive, make, or deliver the meals. The ministry is accepting of all religions and walks of life. As they meet different members of the community with meals and supplies, the volunteers make it a priority to remind each person that they are loved and prayed for. For our project with UBFM, members of the staff made over 200 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to be delivered. We made the sandwiches at our regular meeting spot, the Elvis house. Each member brought in materials ranging from plastic knives to loaves of bread to make and pack up the meals. As we made the sandwiches, Sydney Graeter, an Impact staff member, gave us the clever tip to use peanut butter on both sides of bread before spreading the jelly. She guaranteed that this would keep the bread from becoming soggy before the sandwiches could be distributed. The hour making sandwiches flew by as we had great conversations about everything from the mission of UBFM to past and upcoming football games. Ruth Calicott, another Impact staff member, said “I really enjoyed spending time with this staff and learning about the impactful work that UBFM does for our city.” After we finished assembling and packing up the sandwiches, we had certainly worked up an appetite. Luckily after all our work, we were treated to a delicious pizza dinner. The entire event was a wonderful experience to bond as a staff and make an “Impact” on the greater Memphis community.
